Welcome to Roving Museum!
We will publish ongoing news of what we’re up to on this page, so please check back with us from time to time – we really appreciate your interest.
At present we are still in the early stages of setting up the charity and launching our first project “The British Cotton Industry: Joining the People’s Dots”.
The ideas of the Roving Museum, and the project are the brainchildren of our Chair and founder, Agnes Fough. She has a lot of experience of speaking in schools, and was shocked to learn that schools generally do not cover the history of the slave trade and its connection to the cotton industry and the industrial revolution. Moreover, there is very little literature on the subject.
Some museums, notably the Museum of Slavery in Liverpool, and Manchester’s Museum of Science and Industry, do cover aspects of this – but they don’t fully “join the dots”.
Moreover, from a school perspective, whilst visits to a museum are possible, a far better option would be to bring the musem experience to the school.
Hence Agnes’ idea of creating a “roving museum” – where we can bring the exhibits and experience into the school.
Our long term vision is to create this mobile museum in a double-decker bus, but in the more immediate future (2026 to 2028) we intend to create a simpler platform whereby we can test out the idea with schools, and develop it further with their feedback.
More news in due course!
